Let me answer you this way, as a perfect illustration of how F'd up the Politicians have allowed (and personally I'd say mandated, I'm sure unofficially so as to CYA) the adminstrators of these systems to implement them:

My dad was with my mom at Sams Club one day. He wanted to get ribs, which Sams had in a plastic pack, 2 or 3 slabs to a pack. Upon picking up the pack he saw it was $30 or something like that, and said F that, not going to pay that much for ribs from Sams.

Fast forward to checkout line. They're standing in one line, 3 women standing next to them in another line. In their cart, it had many many packages of these ribs (the cart was full of rib packages). Oldest lady opens her wallet, in it are 3 Links cards. She points to one of them, the next oldest woman shakes her head No. She points to another Links card, she shakes her head No. Oldest lady takes out 3rd Links card, pays for the cart full of ribs with (one) of her Links cards.

If that's not abuse/misuse of public welfare, I don't know what is.

Chuck

Would it have been more acceptable if they were cans of spam?

To be honest, at least she's buying ribs, I don't see myself being outraged over something like that if I saw it checking out somewhere.

I agree they (those committing fraud) should be restricted from EBT card/cash use. Give them food stamps only. No I do not think welfare should be cut. Fraud should be thoroughly investigated though.

For someone who claims not to be republican, you sure use Fox News almost every time. ;)

You just fell for the Troll/OP's disinformation, all he linked to shows is that welfare recipients in run down neighborhoods go to their nearest ATM for cash(cash for rent or that long bus ride to get their groceries)not that they spend their cash on booze, gambling or sex.

Can't say for sure, not a Spam eater so I don't know what Spam costs vs. bulk ground beef/chuck/chicken.

What?!?? Ribs are a luxury item, akin to steaks. She's on the public dole, not spending her own money. The protein she should be buying is bulk cheap stuff, not expensive ribs. And certainly not in those quantities.

When I was younger, my family was on Welfare and food stamps. Are we not doing that anymore? I remember not being able to purchase anything beyond the necessary marked items with food stamps. Who thought it was a good idea to let aide money be used for all purchases?

The Mege Corporations that make huge profits off the products those food stamps of your youth would not pay for.

Ribs go for $2-$3 a lb at Costco, hardly an expensive luxury item. Frugal people buy in large quantites and freeze - the exact opposite of your point. On top of that the person is preparing food, not wasting money on fast food.

So welfare recipients are now wasting the money on strip clubs, liquor and porn. I did not know that these were critical necessities

Where is the oversight on how the welfare money is spent? Do those idiot government bureaucrats just give them the money and let them spend it on whatever they want?

Clearly these people should NOT be getting and welfare money and should be taken off along with having to pay back the money

These people need to be kicked off welfare and there needs to be much more cuts to the welfare programs in order to prevent abuse and waste of tax dollars like this

Do you agree that they should be kicked off and there needs to be major cuts to welfare?

How much did you take out? My guess is not much because most likely you don't have enough cash to pay attention....

That would have been amazing news to me (and pretty much everyone else I know that enjoys ribs ((who doesn't??))), so, I went and checked tonight just to be sure I wasn't making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Ground Beef: 2.49/lb.
Ribs: 4.99/lb.

The ribs also are anywhere around 12-20% bone weight (depending on choice of cut, which in a grocery store, won't be the 12% variety).

That leavs ribs at double the price of ground beef, for less actual edible meet.

The exact point of my point.

Are graham crackers also a luxury item akin to tiramisu?

Luxury item, as in, you should be eating basic food, not food way more expensive because that's what you want to eat. The Public shouldn't give a shit what you want to eat when you're living off the public dole, The Public is providing you basic life sustaining food, nothing more, nothing less. See my post above.

Chuck

P.S. Ribs done right IMO are definitely better than steak of the same price per lb. Neither are something someone taking public funds should be buying.

The money is spent. Now if it's buying ribs or on ground beef it doesn't matter - that money goes back into the economy....

This is a response to all you idiots who believe that somebody who is getting food stamps should eat the cheapest and least expensive food.....
That is totally wrong......they are allowed to purchase whatever type of foods they desire as long as it meets the guidelines set forth by whoever oversees the program!

Some previous idiot said they shouldn`t be able to purchase ribs.....

So let me guess they should be purchasing powdered milk instead of regular milk?

Idiots abound in this thread......

The EBT cards need to be coded such that they are not available for ATM use and also limited to type of goods purchased.

This. I think they should be coded to require an employee's/manager's signature to complete any purchase, then let the managers know (on the basis of what their business is) whether they can accept welfare cards or not. Grant a purchase without a signature or sign when you're not authorized? Your business gets a hefty fine and said welfare recipient faces sanctions.

And any option to withdraw cash from the account or transfer money out should be prohibited.

No, they can buy whatever they want. But the budget per person should be based on the bare minimum. Welfare is supposed to be a safety net to give you 2500 calories a day and a roof over your head until you can find a better job.

Maybe we should do the same for people on Social Security.

Do you have a problem with someone on government assistance owning a computer, having the internet, or cable/sat TV?

Rice and beans only imo.

Government cash assistance isn't intended for food. Or do yo expect these people to have no vehicle, no items in the homes, no gas, no utilities, barren homes/apartments.

Beyond stupid.

People here against allow cash to be pulled out, what if their utility won't accept the EBT card directly, how the F do you expect them to pay for it.

If you can't pay for it, then you shouldn't have it. Are you seriously for buying someone a car and fully furnishing their house with your tax money?
