Welding... or what?

I have a simple welding task. I'm a handy DIY guy but haven't gone into this sort of thing other than propane and some Mapp gas (using a propane tip). Yeah, I do soldering too and have a variety of materials for that, even a higher heat solder iron I picked up at Harbor Freight (that I probably haven't used).

This current project involves rigidly joining 2 pieces of ~1/4" steel rod perpendicularly in one spot. That's it. It should be basically a T junction. I could take it to a shop that does welding and ask what they'd charge. I've seen cheap welding stuff for sale, was curious, I suppose stuff is out there under $100. I own a house, could come in handy, but obviously just to do this very simple weld would cost a lot less if brought to a shop. I remember one time doing that about 40 years ago and IIRC, the guy did it for free.

There might be another way to make that rigid join, a clamp, who knows?

The purpose of this is to make a stand I can stick in the ground to hold 5-6 golf clubs so they won't sit in the dewy grass and get all wet. The top piece (the part that isn't vertical) will be in the shape of 3/4 of a rectangle, about 2" to 4" to 2". The join would be in the middle of the interior 4" section. Hope that's clear.

I played a round about 2 weeks ago and my partner had this. He obviously bought it but searching online I don't see it, just stuff that's obviously inferior.

Well, I did a work around. I had made one out of too-thin rod steel (bendy). I found another rod a little thicker and wired it to the other in the vertical segment (using an old guitar string). Taped the joint (masking, then black electrical tape). Should work OK, I think... will bring to the course tomorrow!

you could buy a long bolt and a couple L brackets bolt the L brackets to the bolt and make the end pointy. stick the bolt in the ground.
