Welcoming a friend back to the US....

arcenite

Lifer
He was caught in a gunfight near tikrit, buddy got knocked out from a 7.62 to the helmet, he took 4 in the chest and one to the back before 40mming the two enemies. If it wasn't for the armor they were both wearing they would not be alive to share their story.

Bill

Edit: I hate media.

Bill

Exactly which politicians are trying to do away with troops and their armor?

Wasn't there a whole thing on how they were going to cut funding?

If there was, it was some media led bull$hit intended to turn away those that are on the fence about the whole issue of Iraq. I can say first hand (because I work on a large Army installation), that the armor and equipment is being fielded to troops going to Iraq in large quantities.

according to the news media, everything that happens in iraq is 'near tikrit'.

It's what he told me, he found a sword of saddam's and a gold plated pistol that he was not allowed to keep most likely because a higher-up got it.

No, most likely because it's against the law to take such things. There is a rigid and defined process for taking such things and more than likely that process was adhered to and the items will become part of the unit's historical archives if they really were items that belonged to Saddam.

I dunno, that seems kinda weird. Most soldiers don't come back after something like that and are so nonchalant about it. One of my close close friends went to Kosovo during the Clinton administration and the only person he ever told was his brother. He got separated from his unit and was face to face with an enemy, both had their guns to each other's heads, neither spoke the other's language, and he had to shoot the guy in order to keep living.

Those are just images you don't want to remember, and he didn't want his mom or sister to know. It's not like it's some football game or something and it's the equivalent of making a big play. If someone came back and first thing he did was tell those kinds of stories then he must be one mentally strong person.

Edit: Make sure your friend knows how much those of us back home appreciate what he's doing though.

This means, essentially, don't trust ANY media source implicitly...because there is NO SUCH THING as unbiased reporting. ALL MEDIA SOURCES HAVE AN AGENDA and their own biases, whether they are implicit or hidden. Even so-called "objective" media sources like the BBC and NHK (Japan) will have agendas, inasmuch as Al-Jazeera, CNN, or Fox News do.

Couple of things:

1) No "higher up" got to keep that stuff. We are *very* limited on what we can send back home from over here. Those items never would have made it through Customs, and anyone trying to get them through would have been in a world of trouble.

2) UAHs (Up Armored HMMWVs), body armor, and AoA (Add-on Armor) for vehicles is arriving in great quantities. I cannot, of course, tell you how much, when, where, etc., but suffice it to say that no one is cutting back on those things. If anything, the situation is continuing to improve.

Just a little perspective from the deserts of Kuwait.
