Yeah, I know, I'm way behind the curve, but I just got my first portable audio device (since that boombox in '89) - an 8GB Nano. So now I need some stuff:

• For the car - no aux jack, so will an FM xmitter or a tape (yeah, I know) adapter deliver better quality?

• For working out - I know earbuds fail constantly. With that in mind, is there a clear bang-for-the-buck winner out there, balancing sound quality, construction and price?

Those tape adaptors work fairly well and they're really cheap.

For earbuds, a lot of people seem to like the Klipsch image X1s, they are good quality for the price.

Tape adapter will be far better quality, if you can still find them and your tape player isn't borked in some way.

As far as headphones go it's pretty subjective. For working out I'd for an in-ear design, and for bang for the buck I've had good luck with Sony. They're not the best in the longevity department but I always thought they had the better sounding "cheap" headphones out there. All I say is stay away from Skull Candy and you'll be fine.

Amazon has these as deal of the week:

Klipsch is usually a higher end brand so I'm not sure how the low end stacks up, but they should at least sound decent and be well made.

Klipsch S2 (the US version of the X1s, apparently?) and a tape adapter on the way.

Let's hope the tape player isn't borked (I haven't used it in the 7 years I've owned the car, just the CD player).

Thanks guys.

Sony C9 tape adapter, best there is.

Everything iPod:
www.ilounge.com

can you tell me why tahts the best there is?

this seems like close to dumb technology to me and that there should be a bunch of these. I've gone through 2 already, and my 3rd one isnt great because everything comes out really soft. So is the Sony c9 worth it?

I read about the C9 being the best, so I bought one and compared it to the others I had. Good volume, clean sound, been running for years.

Yeah, it's worth it.

I imagine that market is quite small. It's rare enough to need a tape adapter anymore anyway. Cars have had aux inputs standard for a number of years now, and all aftermarket stereos have aux with many of them having FRONT mounted aux inputs.

I got one of those tape adaptors in poundland (shop that sells every item for £1) a few years ago and it sounded fine.

I got rid of that car last year though, my new car has front aux, USB mp3, bluetooth streaming all built in. I can stream music from my phone without taking it out of my pocket, and even skip tracks using the steering wheel controls, it's pretty sweet.
