Back facing cameras on tablets seem like a poor decision, though I've seen a number of iPad owners in public using the stupid as a point/shoot camera. iDevice owners usually aren't known for their smarts. :p

I think that one of the iPad commercials demonstrated the use-case for the back-facing camera: live video call of baby's first steps so that daddy can watch, while mom looks for genuine delight in dad's face in order to tell whether or not he's about to run off to find a drink and a mistress.

Except these things never include costs that aren't nearly as tangible such as development time. I'm actually curious what that would cost since it should fall as you sell more units.

There's also junk like marketing.

Wait, this was a 7" tablet selling for $500? Well that was pretty dumb, sort of like the Playbook.

Why were all these companies trying to sell 7" tablets for the same price as the 10" iPad? With the feature-limited Fire coming in at $200, it seems like $250-300 will become the standard price for 7" tablets. As a consumer I say bring it on.

Lots of people buy laptops for use in their bedrooms or on an occasional trip to Grandma's house, others of us are road warriors who have to lug these things around on a daily basis. I don't want some bulky laptop or chunky tablet that looks like it's cheaply built. I want a thin, light, sturdily built device & understand that these things come with a premium price tag.

As an example, I had an Asus Transformer and liked it, till I had a chance to work with a 10.1 Galaxy Tab, in day to day real life use the GT was more pleasant to use, the extra features offered by the TF was not enough to offset it's extra weight and the fact that the edges of the thing were sharp enough to make holding it for longer periods of time uncomfortable for me. Form factor & build quality do matter!

Btw, I'm one of those people guilty of using a tab to snap a pic or two with it at an event, LOL ,given a choice between holding the tab in one hand and my phone in the other, I'll hold the tablet and keep my other hand free for snatching up drinks and apps :)

:D I bet Samsung gave you the 10.1 Galaxy Tab for free.
Newegg has the Transformer with free dock for $399 right now. MSRP on the dock is $150 so it's relatively good deal to have that thrown in for free. Transformer 2 will be released soon though so keep that in mind.

Actually, no, the Galaxy Tab was only a loaner for review purposes, nobody has given me anything.

Tablet makers could still lower the price and enjoy healthy margins by cutting out the crap that isn't necessary, like back-facing cameras (or just make the front-facing camera rotate).

How do you use Skype without a back camera?

Oh, that's rather tempting even though I'd rather wait for the Transformer II. Just the thought of getting a $150 dock for free makes the cheap-ass in me salivate. :p
