Weirdness with wireless setup...

Hooked up a D-Link DI-624 wirelessG router (128-bit WEP enabled 😉) and tested the range with the 802.11G card that came iwth the bundle. The link strength about 3 feet from the router is around 45% but if I go downstairs (~30 feet) or outside, the strength goes up to between 75-100%. I really dont mind, but any explanation for this weirdness? The router is sitting 1 foot off the floor under my wooden desk.
