Weird XP Problem....

OK here is the scoop. Basically I installed Windows XP a few weeks ago and at first I could Directly Connect with AIM to one friend and not to the other. I just reformatted for other reasons ( i corrupted the registry) and now i can't directly connect to the first friend, but can to the 2nd. I have a Linksys router, but I don't believe this is the problem. Besides not being able to directly connect I can't connect to them to play games like Diablo 2 (when you connect to someone's ip), i can't ping them either...

any ideas?

BTW: the firewall is disabled.

If you're still connecting through the Linksys, make sure you download and install the latest firmware from Linksys. The later firmware versions have an option that allows you to circumvent the security settings for certain games, etc.. For the life of me, I can't remember what the new option/feature is called, but you can access it by clicking the "Advanced" tab. I believe the option lives under either the "Filters" or the "Forwarding" tabs in the advanced menu. Be advised that you may have to have DHCP disabled in order to use this feature.

Good luck!

<addition> Also, make sure "Enable WAN Blocking" is disabled. I believe that option is under the "Filters" menu.

I updated the firmware... but i still can't ping my friend.. it's weird. I haven't yet tried connecting to a game with him, but if i can't ping him then how could i conect to a game with him?

Pinging and playing a game with him is another story. If you friend is also using a router or firewall of some sort, it could be blocking the ping. Or maybe you firewall is doing something.
