Weird X1900 behavior in old game

I've been replaying Battlezone (the first one) for the last week and am running into a strange problem. The X1900 fan occasionally shuts down completely in the middle of the game. I use headphones and can't hear the fan speed change, so it just overheats and crashes after a minute.

I know old games often have weird issues on modern systems, but it's actually affecting something at the hardware level here. I normally use ATI Tool to set the fan speed to a constant 80% whenever a game loads up, by specifying the exe names directly instead of using the 3D detection, but that doesn't do anything in this game. I can still set the fan speed manually and then load up the game, which works but sometimes results in the fan shutting off as described earlier.

I reverted the card to stock speeds, but that made no difference. This is the only game I'm getting this problem in. Anyone here seen anything like it?

I had problems with fan speeds and ati tray tools. Turned my fan off a couple of times - so now use rivatuner as I have had conflicts with ati tools also.

I'll use Rivatuner then. I have never run into any problems with this before, but it's a worth a try.

Vectorbeams FTW!!

Damn, I remember the coin-op cabinet model of that game. The dual Y-axis only joysticks. The molded plastic visor thingy that was always covered with the forehead grease of countless, unknown arcade junkies.

Ahh, memories 😀

But seriously, it's not surprising to see older games behaving bizzarely under XP. Though it IS odd to see one get past the HAL in such a way. Setting it to Win9X under the compatibility tab might be worth a try; that may emulate a shell in which the game is more comfortable (or perhaps the OS; maybe the game attempts to talk to the hardware in ways that Compatibility Mode anticipates, but native XP, etc. doesn't).
