Weird Windows XP Login Problem

When I choose a login name in windows xp to login, it says loading setting, then shows logging off and stays at the login screen, does the same thing when I try to login again. Is this some virus or worm any of you heard of?

Usually that's a permissions problem on your profile or a corrupt registry hive.

First thing is to check in the eventviewer and see if you can tell what the real problem is.

I may have to reformat because there is no way for me to get into windows becasue of that login problem I have stated. Safe mode does not have no options for me. What can I do through the recovery console from the xp disc?

Not much that I know of, the recovery console is extremely limited. I'm not even sure if cacls runs so you could check permissions.

go into safe mode, loing under the administrator account, and then create another user(users and groups control panel) and then reboot into windows and login under the new account
