weird weird weird - after elec. blackout, I have a dual boot option now!?

so I come home and all my clocks are flashing...I guess I had a power outage....

weirdest part is, I turn on my pc and before it pulls up the Win2K screen, I have a dual boot option! It wasn't there before, but both say Windows 2000 Pro.

So what should I do? My computer's running fine, but that dual boot thing is really weird and bothers me.

Check out your "boot.ini" file in the root directory (C:\)

They should be 2 listings pointing to the same thing. Just delete one and you are fine.

If you are uneasy about deleting or mucking with that file, goto your startup settings in control panel.

In control panel, under system, under Advanced tab, in Startup and Recovery. There will be an area for Default Operating Systems, just unclick the button that displays the list.

As for why you now have 2 listsings, totally beyond me😕

I can't find a boot.ini file. Is there something wrong with this picture? I'm doing a file search and nothing comes up.

I did uncheck the list box though for the 2 OS's.

If you unchecked that box, you will no longer get the boot options at startup!

If you cannot find a boot.ini file, you may have "Hide system files" checked.

In explorer (not IE, but file explorer), under Tools, then under Folder Options, under the View tab...."Hidden Files and Folders", check "show hidden files and folders".

That should unhide the boot.ini file.

thanks a bunch for the tip. My dual boot is gone now, BUT....i really can't find the boot.ini file! I've unchecked hidden 'files and folders' and did a search for it....how's my computer even starting up??

Someone may correct me if I am wrong, but I would deduce that the boot.ini file is only for dual booting information.

I would also deduce that your 2 options that were coming up, were an anomoly from the lightning strike that shut down your PC unexpectedly.

Windows can be funny, and I think this is a perfect example of it being so:Q

And Your Welcome,
