weird video problem

my friend had this happen to his computer- he uses a geforce4 mx

here's what he said

"thats windows but it starts even before windows loads. therefore i knwo it isnt the drivers....... i tried a bios flash and it was successful the flash, but didnt help the problem... now if i hit reset after the comp has loaded...... it then loads properly yet the video out part is till black and white. "

It is either a bad video card or the video cable to the monitor. I would try either a different card or a different monitor as a test.

well if he was able to screenshot that pic- it cant be the monitor---

there's a chance its the video card but i dont know if he has an extra to swap it with- any other ways to troubleshoot this?

Here's an update- he says he only occasionally gets this problem like when he leaves his computer off for a few hours and turns it back on. So for when the computer is having a cold boot i guess-
