weird trackball problem on laptop

Here's what's been going on.

I have an older logitech trackman marble + (the trackball with the ball on the left and a scroll wheel). I wasn't using the trackball on any other system, so I threw it on my Toshiba Laptop (1800-s247 i think) plugged into the PS2 port. It works fine....except the scroll wheel. I checked the settings for the mouse and it said "assume wheel is present" I tried installing the newest mouseman drivers from logitech, and with them installed, i can barely move the ball, and the pointer jumps all over the screen, and stuff starts popping open like i've clicked on the left and right button about 20 times. I uninstalled the logitech crap and the trackball is working again, but still nothing from the wheel. I checked in the hardware settings and checked it to auto-detect between a mouse plugged in and the touchpad. The trackball works, but still no mouse. I install the logitech drivers, and the pointer jumps all over the screen again. I don't know what else to do really.....so if anyone has any suggestion or has had any similar problems, let me know.

Thanks in advance.

forgot to tell ya, i'm running winxp home
