I'm having a totally strange stalling problem with IE 5.0. My computer is a generic AMD K6/400 (running at 333) with 128 megs of ram and Windows 98SE. Sometimes when I'm surfing around with IE 5.0 the browser won't respond at all. After a while, the computer will eventually show disk activity and IE will say "Web site found, waiting for reply.." and finally load up the page. Sometimes if I ctl-alt-del and escape out of that screen the hard drive shows activity, and IE goes to the web page.. Also, sometimes if I go to the start menu and escape out of that it will load up the web page.. seems like some dll or something like that isn't working correctly..

Every other internet app seems to work like telnet, winmx, and netscape when IE is doing this. Anyone know what might be causing this?

thanks for any help..

EDIT: forgot to add that under Win2k on this computer that this doesn't happen.. also I'm using iVasion WinPPPOE with Sprint DSL..

Honestly, this sounds like a problem with the browser... You may want to look at reinstalling the browser.

I wouldn't think the browser is the problem. This doesn't sound like a software problem...it sounds like a network settings problem. I would type in your DNS server in your TCP/IP setup. Go to your network properties, tcp/ip properties, and set your DNS server to a server you know is good. I think the requests are getting stuck somewhere in the PPPOE. Who knows...if you want a good DNS server, PM me and I'll give you a solid address to try in your DNS setup. Good luck.

Scarpozzi: thanks for the advice, I think that was it! Everything seems to be working now. It WOULD stall on DNS lookups for other apps as well.. just didn't think of that at all..

Wonder why that would cause such a problem. If you don't enter DNS numbers does it have to lookup the server IP's every time?

thanks again..

Does it hang when you try to do a Search engine search, like if you went to www.aol.com for instance and did a search, does it Hang there? Does it hang when you try to open Outlook Express?

If it does what I said above it could be a virus. I had the same problem and it was a virus that corrupted my files for IE and Outlook. I had to format the drive and reinstall win to get it back to normall.

Mota311: Didn't think of that. I've done recent virus scans with McAfee (with updated dat's), and nothing came up.

Here's another situation:

Load up two or more copies of IE and try to get to different web sites in each window. The problem is happening, so none of them are loading. Start up netscape. Netscape works, and the IE pages will load as well.

After thinking about it some, here's a guess: some dll is hanging in IE, so when netscape loads up it loads the dll or something like that. I've had this problem on the same computer in Win98SE before, and reloading windows worked, but it was only a few weeks before the same behavior started up again.. anyone know what this file might be?

thanks again..
