Weird "Stall" in Win2k with MSI K7T Pro-2A & Duron

Hi,

I've got a system that I built with the following hardware for some of my family members.

MSI K7T Pro-2A
Duron 800
256MB Micron 133Mhz CAS 2
Asus 7100 Geforce MX 32MB
IBM 45GB 7200 RPM ATA100 drive
Creative 52X CDROM

Anyways, I've noticed that whenever I try to download or copy any larger (>500k or so) file from another machine to this new one, it almost always has this weird pause after grabbing between 50 and 100k of the file. Most times it never proceeds. This happens with both HTTP downloads, FTP downloads.

Also, I've been having Windows Explorer freeze up on me when browsing the "network places", which I've never seen in Win 2k before.

What's even more bizzare is that I have problems copying things from a machine that "works" to this machine's shares because it complains "Cannot copy [filename ]: The specified network name is no longer available."

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? I've been going nuts trying to figure out what is going on here, so if anybody can help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you!

First thing that comes to mind is VIA drivers... have you installed the latest 4-in-1's ? If that doesn't help, I'd start working on drivers for your NIC and see if that helps any...

I went ahead and installed the Via drivers and things still behave the same... I got a Linksys 10/100 NIC, but their site doesn't seem to be up right now, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to check for an updated driver from them...

I could easily take that NIC back and get a different one too, if that might be the culprit. I've used Linksys cards in other machines (although this is a newer one with Wake on Lan)...

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

So, I flashed my bios (I think), but when I boot up, it still refers to Bios V1.0A... How do I know if it worked?

I'm still getting the weird "pause" -- I've now installed Windows ME and I get the same screwy behavior...

Thanks!

Got it. It was a bad network card. As soon as I put in a spare card I had laying around, everything started to work just great.

Thanks for the help!

Well it seems like to me, you might have bad RAM.
I built a msi k7t pro2a system with a amd t-bird 1 GHZ
and i would have problems copying .cab files and certain dll files.
Coudlnt figure out for my life what the problem was. i tried switching CD-Rom to
hard drive and everythign you can think of. even returned my mobo for a new one.
finally i thought maybe its the ram so i stuck anew piece of ram and got rid of the old
ones and never had any more problems.
