Weird spam messages

Kev

Lifer
I get messages like this...

SUBJECT: When they entered the candlelit Great Hall it was almost full.
BODY: You should generally leave these signals alone unless you really understand how job control works.

What is the point of this crap? Are they just testing bouncebacks, or do they just want to annoy people that much?

was there a picture attached. I have noticed that the subject and body are just random words and phrases, then they have a .gif that displays what the real message is.

It's text that's meant to fool spam filters.

I hate spammers. If someone has a filter in place, hey genius, don't you think that they DON'T WANT your junk mail??!?

is this one something like Wordpress?

I used to get those.. now I get a LOT of porn spam messages. I even changed the settings in WordPress to require registration to post and then unchecked the box allowing comments on the posts I have made, virtually preventing any messages from even being allowed.

yet from yesterday through today I just let 30 messages collect, and I tagged them all as spam in the window for messages awaiting moderation and got rid of them all.
they just keep coming no matter what I do. and I refuse to shut my site down. Don't know how WP is failing to prevent the messages when I told it to not allow anything period, and require registration. hmmm

You think yours are strange... I get strange ones like these:

Subject: None
Body: hi, this raina ,
roll no. 55,
i still havent got my sweat shirt after 3 months (size -medium)
i see no chance of getting it now.
would u b kind enough 2 pay me back.
we both know that no one is going 2 bring back d medium sized ones they took by "mistake", in return of d small ones they ordered in d first place, & which dont fit them now, bcoz they r too small.
have d courtesy 2 reply & let me know wat u r going 2 do about it.

awaiting ur reply
u can always callme.

Use Akismet. It's got a 100% success rate on my WordPress blog thus far. (Get the key you need from WordPress.com.)

heh heh
it took me going into my ftp directory to discover akismet is already installed natively with my WP software, at least, apparently.
regardless, I activated it and created an account at wordpress.com to get an API key and now I hope this will squash the little bug known as spam.
thanks 🙂

i've noticed the same thing over the past few years. a long time ago spam actually tried to sell something or pointed to a URL that actually loaded.

now its just gibberish with broken links. what's the point?

I'd read it's a calculated effort by spammers to break the Spam filters of the various email providers. If email with those words are blocked, then regular mail won't make it through either, and people will have to stop using the spam filter.
