Hi ..I posted this in the motherboard section (no solution found), but it may be the OS (98SE) that is a prob.
I built me a new system around the MSI Pro 2. I installed my hard drive from from my old system, after I had deleted the Enum key in the registry. The old mainboard (Soyo 5EHM) and the new MSI both use Via chipsets.
Well, everything is fine except I have no sound. I have enabled the inboard sound in the bios, and here are the facts.
There are no conflicts in device manager. Sound is at IRQ 10.
Volume control does not show up on the taskbar, although it has been loaded, unloaded, and reloaded in the windows setup section of Control Panel.
In the Sounds section of control panel, all the sound files are there, but the arrow to the right of preview pane does not function, is greyed out.
In the Multimedia section of Control Panel, the place to select activation of the volume control is non-funtional, being greyed out. The check mark is visible in that greyed out box, though non-funtional.
Well, that is probably enough for now. Hope to have sound soon, with some good hep.
Thanks.

You will have to load drivers to get the sound to work. Check your motherboards site.

Are you telling me that the drivers that came on the CD were not right? Like I said, I have no conflicts in device manager, and the inability to even turn on the volume control makes it even odder to me.

OK...I got it fixed. I deleted my system.dat & user.dat, and then rebooted to safe mode / C: ...and then reloaded Win 98SE form the install folder I had o the hard drive.
Worked like a charm, and all is well.
I hope this helps someone else.
Thanks for the replies.
