Weird software problem with ATI Radeon 7200 in Win2000

Today I bought an ATI Radeon 7200 video card in Best Buy, brought it home, installed it into my AGP slot, and booted up my Windows 2000 Pro SP2.
The computer was booting up just fine -- located everything correctly, started loading Windows 2000, but after the graphical progress bar of Windows 2000 startup finishes and the computer should start the actual user interface, the screen goes dark and there is no HD activity.
I used the drivers that came with the card. Windows successfully detected the card initially, and after drivers were installed it showed everything correctly, like the card's processor speed and amount of memory.
I went into Safe Mode, uninstalled it, then reinstalled it again, tried to run it on the lowest resolution and color setting... when it's on 16 colors @ 640x480, it works fine, although I cannot possibly be satisfied by that. I did this multiple times, trying various configurations.
One of two things happens when Windows gets to the GUI phase: either the screen goes black, or it shows some weird pattern on it. After either one, the machine totally freezes, and the keyboard stops responding.
MenuetOS runs fine on this machine, even at 16-bit resolution, so this is definitely not the graphics card fault -- it's Windows 2000. I know that the card supports that, since there are Windows 2000 drivers on the installation CD.

Could anyone throw some ideas at me why this is happening?
I'd hate to return this perfectly good card just because my Windows 2000 seems to be malfunctioning.
Thanks.

I had the same problem with my Radeon and XP.

Did you un install the old drivers and programs from your old card?

Un install them and change to standard VGA if you can. Then reinstall the card and drivers.

Those drivers came with Windows, and yes, they're fully removed.
While in safe mode, I removed ALL display controllers and then Windows reinstalled my ATI Radeon one.
Still no luck. :(

Thats what mine was doing in XP...same'o same'o.

The wierd thing is I was having no problems in 2000 Pro though.

I finally went into the BIO's and dissabled AGP 4X and then I finally got it to work OK in XP..

You may wanna try that.
