Discussion Weird Shutdown/Wake Issue - MSI B660 Tomahawk

Maybe this isn't a problem, but just something I recently saw and somehow have found a workaround for, and I thought I'd share for the benefit of the community and anyone else who might stumble across this kind of relatively insiginficant problem.

Setup:
  • MSI B660 Tomahawk WIFI DDR4 board; latest bios (7D41v2E)
  • Windows 11 home
  • Keyboard and mouse set to allow for waking from sleep
  • "Fast Boot" disabled in Windows power settings
  • USB was allowed as a wake timer in BIOS
Sleep and wake all worked fine using the mouse to wake the computer. The weird part was recently, I noticed that I could use the mouse to initiate a boot from a full shutdown.

It seems that the fix was to:
Enable ErP in BIOS (and enable USB power in S4/S5 once "ErP" was enabled).

Now I can sleep and wake with keyboard/mouse, but also not boot the machine when it has been fully shutdown.

I like being able to cold start a PC from keyboard. That function has been available for years but not when using a USB keyboard/mouse. You need to use an old PS/2 keyboard and your MB have a dedicated PS/2 socket. Not all do and a PS/2 keyboard to USB adapter, as you'd imagine, doesn't work, at least not when I tried it.

If there is one BIOS/MB option I wouldn't mind being able to choose it is to do that without using a secondary PS/2 keyboard. The Gigabyte MB I selected for 'latest' build (still haven't really started it) was chosen partly because it does have a PS/2 socket to give me that option if I want it.

I fitted a PS/2 keyboard to my other desktop to do this for a good reason. The MasterCooler case I used for that is notorious for the stupidly designed On/Off button's plastic spring breaking over time. Solution: just don't use it.

I can't remember the last time I started that PC any other way.

Keyboard/Mouse (USB) restart from Hibernation/Sleep still work and all I had to do with my Gigabyte Z77 MB was to enable keyboard (PS/2) start in the BIOS.

As I switch off mains power after use there is no chance of accidentally restarting the PC.

I didn't like this feature because if I bumped my desk, it could initiate a boot after shutdown thanks to the wireless mouse moving. I just wanted shut down to be shut down - it was the first time I had ever seen this as an issue, and more recently, it seemed to have started at BIOS 7D41.2D. I don't mind USB wake from standby, it was just weird to see it work from cold boot.

As for control from the main power, that's certainly possible, but in my case, my power strip is hidden away and covers my work laptop and my monitors - so a bunch of things are shared, making that impractical.

You could always just use an external power switch.
