WEIRD REBOOTING PROBLEM!!!

Hello, I have a very strange rebooting problem.

the specs are as follows:

Asus A7V 333 mb
Athlon xp 1800+
256 PC-2700 DDR333 memory
Radeon 7000

I built this computer for a friend of mine. Everything was working fine, installed win xp, and then suddenly the computer resets while i was installing office xp. So i thought ok its just one reset, then later on I reinstall office, it finishes, and then after 5 mins it resets itself again. Then, i load back xp and go back into windows and leave it there for like 2 mins and then it resets. Now here comes the strange part, after this reset it continues to reset while trying to load windows. It resets literally everytime. Also it would reset when i try to load safe mode into windows. Now, i think it is a windows problem (ie. reinstalling windows). But i feel it is also a hardware problem, because of the earlier resets.

Anyone have an idea as to what is causing the resets? Another friend of mine had problems wit massive resetting and he said it was his power supply. SO we are gonna try exchanging that.

But, it is definately not the heat because he has a good fan and the temp is at like 29degrees celcius. I just cannot figure out what is cuasing the resets. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

could be a windows problem... sounds like it MIGHT be some sort of a problem with hard disk accessing... I had a similar problem on a CUSL2-C mobo.. some people said DO NOT install the ATA storage drivers for these boards, but i had to, just so it would run properly. it could be a matter if having to re-install XP, then installing a new set of 4in1's right off the bat. Just a thought. not sure if that's the actual problem or not.. but it sounds possible. it could also be a driver glitch.. i would definitely (!) recommend re-installing XP since it's a fresh install anyways you're not going to lose anything. try that first, and try a certain order for installing drivers/software. i always do this order when I install Win2K. OS -> Service pack 2 (or 3 now) -> VIA 4in1 drivers -> DirectX, and then all following drivers. (video, sound, network) give that a try.

Remember by default in winxp it is set to restart the cpu at any error...ie old BSOD which could give you a sign of the problem will not be displayed instead the pc will just restart....

Go into system and uncheck that box....

At least this may be able to tell you if it is a software, hardware, or other issue....

This is common winxp thing...
