How do planes know when they've been locked on? (ie. is this BS that was created by the movie)

I think in war games they have devices for signaling being hit and such. But in RL, I think the only indicator is the smoke trail approaching your position at mach 3.

When a plane is trying to lock onto its target it is emitting large amounts of radar energy. The plane being targeted can pick up on these radar signal and have the computer onboard warn the pilot about the threat. Of course this using the radar to achieve a lock but heatseeking missiles can be fired without a radar lock so in this situation the only way to tell is by visually looking for a smoke trail.
