Weird question for IT people in India (do we have any here?)

We have a branch company in India (we're in the US) that wants to use an application we wrote. The problem is that they tell us they cannot get Microsoft SQL Server in India - and that's what the application uses.

Assuming you cannot get SQL Server in India, what databases CAN you get there? Oracle? Access? Sybase?

sorry can't answer your question, but just interested... why can't SQL Server be used in India..? doesn't make sense.

That's odd.

My former employer had almost 75% of it's programming outsourced to an office in India. The apps that they were writing were written with a sybase backend.

I don't know exactly, but I looked at the box from our copy of SQL server, and it says "Unlawful to export from the US or Canada without an approved Department of Commerce export license".

Yes, I noticed that page too, which is why I was so puzzled when I went to this page and found no SQL Server entry on the list of software products.

maybe that's just because your copy of SQL server is only designed for N.Am. use..? assuming MS has different features for other parts of the world...? It's probably because that warning is for an end user, saying that an end user isn't allows to take this product outside of US and Canada.

I'm guessing that's just to account for differences in currency and export taxes and whatnot that would be accompanied with it. It's also hard to track and validate user licenses when they are 12,000 miles away. I'm sure that the office over there has an India based Microsoft Rep that fix you up.

Look under the .NET products.

Thanks, guys! I'll pass along the vendors contact info to our India branch and see what they can find out.
