weird question... can a car be started without a key or hotwiring?

I've been dating this girl for a couple weeks - her best friend apparently has a huge crush on me, and gets jealous/upset when we hang out. She also makes a point to be around when we do hang out (under the premise of using her washer/dryer, too late to drive, etc etc..) This chick also basically 'lives' with the girl I'm dating (her lease was up or some crap and she's there for a couple weeks)

Last night we basically went out of our way to hang out just her and I.. to avoid her friend and friends drama... we got back to her place late and went right to bed.

This morning her best friend comes barging in and is like her car is stolen!!.. I was like wtf you must have forgotten where you parked it. It's an older car (1992 saturn) and there were many other nicer cars. To cut to the point:

1) they broke in without breaking any glass or damaging anything.
2) they didn't move the seat or steering wheel at all - and this girl is like 5'2
3) they started it without hot wiring it or punching the ignition - no damage to any wiring.
4) it was "ditched" on a walking path with no damage, and nothing stolen (including cd player, mp3 player, and phone)... even though there was nothing wrong with the car - and the location was less than 1/4 mile from the apartment.

Since the chick I'm dating worked today I basically spent the entire day with her friend filing a stolen car report, dealing w/ apt management, meeting w/ cops, driving her to get it from the wrecker, etc etc etc. I wonder if she did all this herself...

opinions? My main issue is that I don't get how the car could be started with 0 damage to anything... or why they ditched it in this walking path

i can't imagine someone making a copy of a 1992 saturn key, so i'm guessing she did it herself.

If the car was manual and the door wasn't unlocked, maybe they just popped the clutch to get it going?

You would still have to have a key to put the ignition in run.

impossible unless the ignition lock is broken already and turns freely with no key (I've seen that on a few beaters before). Doesn't sound like that's the case though.

Do yourself a favor and stop associating with "Single White Female" before she assumes your girl's identity and sh!t REALLY gets interesting. Or at least come back and update this thread when she does.

Yes, it's possible...

Scenario: drunk unlocks his car, gets in, drives away. 8 blocks later, he realizes, "hey, wait, this isn't my car! Oh sh!t!" and he ditches it, rather than taking it back which would risk DWI, Stolen vehicle...

I've seen quite a few times where someone's key works in someone else's car. The guy who bought my first car from me (Datsun 210) had a key that worked just fine in it. While getting in my wife's van at a grocery store, I unlocked someone else's van (same make, model, color), but quickly realized as I started getting in.

news flash: pretty much any car from the early 90's can be stolen with a worn key. honda accord/civics, camrys, and saturns are the most common targets for this kind of theft. around here, it is mostly teenagers using the cars as transportation. the cops say where they find one car, another one is stolen within two blocks. they often don't even damage them or steal the radio, they literally just want to go somewhere. all it takes is a club to protect yourself from it, because there's ALWAYS another accord or camry within a block or two that would be easier for them to steal.

however, i doubt anyone would steal a car to drive it only two blocks.

This is true, my friend has a bunch of filed down Honda, Toyotas and Dodge keys and he goes around and steals cars... He isn't as gentle tho, he normally runs through garbage cans and breaks something in the car for fun, but he has shown me how to do it and it is fairly simple...

Pretty much any Saturn from 86-2002 can be started with a butter knife..

Some cars today don't even HAVE a mechanical ignition. They start with push-buttons, as in certain MB models and the latest Astons. So they can be started without keys and without hotwiring... however you DO need the keychain transponder with you before the car will respond to your repeated button-pushing attempts to steal it.

Hahaha, great. Stab your friend in the neck for me. I guess it's time to wire in that kill switch I've been meaning to get around to. It's only an 88 Accord, but it's my only transportation.
