Weird Question About Widescreen LCD's & Speaker Placement

This may sound like a really stupid question, but...

I'm currently using a computer with a 19" CRT 4:3 monitor. My speakers are to the side and pushed back a little. No problem.

Thing is, planning to upgrade to a 24" widescreen LCD. It'll fit fine at my desk. The issue is, there will no longer be room for speakers directly beside it (it's got an alcove of sorts for the monitor). I checked and measured for a 22" instead, but that won't help...more room but still not enough for speakers.

So, I'm wondering if it would be too weird to have the speakers slightly to the front, but of course pushed toward the edges, of the LCD? In the back obviously won't work because the sound will get muffled, and since I can't put them to the side, this seems like the only viable option (unless I could somehow mount them). I'm also thinking because of the size of the LCD it can be pushed back a bit. I dunno...anyone have any tips or experience with what I'm talking about? It's a bit hard to envision it. Thanks!

depending on the speakers and the LCD, it shoudln't look too weird. THe only thing is, if your LCD has a shiny finish, then make sure you dont push teh speakers inadvertantly while using the computer, because you can easily scratch the finish of the lcd by rubbing the speakers against them. (happened to me when i had klipsch promedias standing in front of a 32" MAG LCD tv.

Is there room above the monitor? If placed above ear level but aimed down towards you, you should still get good results.

I'm not sure yet how much room will be above the monitor, but I'm thinking there should be some. Though I'm not exactly handy when it comes to mounting things like speaker brackets and hate to modify the desk.

Thanks for the tip on placement, and yeah, I'd be extra careful if they're in front. (At least my keyboard and mouse are on a different level than the monitor surface, but joystick could be an issue).

Can you lean them to the side and place them on the bottom? Since you said your getting a 24inch, im assuming its from DELL, with the same feet as my DELL. Mines a 21 regular. Just rest them on the feet like i do, i havent had any problems with it.

I see what you're saying. Not the most elegant solution, but it certainly might work. This might be a case of just getting the stuff and coming up with a solution as it's *really* hard to play with hypotheticals until I see speaker sizes, monitor size, space under the monitor, etc.
