weird problems

i have some problems with a computer i built for a friend. first, he tells me it shuts down randomly and closes applications on a whim, bringing up the blue screen error, about a page file. i went over and looked at it. it ran fine for a while, then it became unstable again. i have it in my possession now and have attempted to reformat. i don't get far enough into the xp installation before it gives me the page fault blue screen error. it has two banks of ram, so i swapped out those. no difference, so i don't think it's the ram. my first guess would be the mobo. here are the comp stats:

Soyo Dragon (first one)
AMD Athlon 1.33 GHz (non-xp)
512 MB RAM (one 256 stick of crucial, one of kingston)
Maxtor 40GB HD
Toshiba DVD/CD-RW drive

Also, the onboard LAN decided to quit working so there's a DLink NIC in there. I also disabled the Promise onboard RAID. Many times the computer won't even advance past the processor identification part, and it reports arbitrary amounts of RAM. often it just sits there and requires many hard reboots. my guess is that there is some kind of mobo problem. any other guesses?
