I've finally (after about 5 tries) reinstalled my OS and it works ok (for now at least). I've been getting a lot a problems with the new install when it goes to automatically update windows, if something else is going on while it is installing it will freeze and I will have to shut down, and then it loses registry files. Last time it lost the windows installer and I couldn't install anything.

AMD 3200+ Winchester
ATI radeon x800xl
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D mobo
512x2 dual channel
windows xp pro

A lot of registry files have randomly been lost or corrupt and I just don't understand why.

Don't overclock.
Test your ram with memtest86.
Try different IDE/SATA cables.
Make sure your PSU is working decently.
