have a friend who has a new computer. a network is setup in the house, here is the problem



<< i am on MY new computer ON the network... but just not in my room. IN my room the other computer works.. but mine doesn't.. so since i'm on the network, the protocols should be fine right? >>



any ideas on why the new computer won't work in his bedroom, but 2 other computers do, and the new computer will connect to the network plugged into a jack in another room...
 
can you explain that again .. are you using a switch/hub, what operating system is each box using? .. and do you get a link light on the nic, on the problem host ? .. and by "not work" what do you mean, does it not "ping" or just not shown in net neighborhood? ..

Has he tried taking a NIC out of one of the computers that does work in their and putting it into the new machine. Perhaps the line to the room is noisy and the NIC in the new computer doesn't like it.
