Weird Problem

My system is connected to a power center, where everthing is plugged into the back and controlled from the front. When I turn on the power center my fans and HDD spin for a second, like the system is trying to start then they power down. I then start my system normally using the power on button on the case.

Why are my fans and HDD spinning up like that? Will it hurt my system?

This is the second system I have set up that does this.

I have a side business building PC's. I've had this happen with several computers I've built over the years. I can't say I've seen it with only one or two brands of motherboards, but I think it is motherboard related, something to do with the ATX. I've tried different power supplies with same motherboards and it still produced this situation. I don't think it will hurt anything.

Another thing I've noticed doing repair work. Most Dell's and HP's I've worked on do this. The moment I plug in the power supply (or hit the hard switch on the power supply), the PC will act as if it starting to boot up, (Lights and Fans) but almost immediately shut off. Then I click on the power button and everything works properly.

My older PC at home does this. I bought it from Gateway rather than building it myself and I found the same problem. The people I talked to about it also said it was motherboard/ATX related. However there should be no problem with it. It shouldn't hurt anything.

Mine currently does this (see DARK in my sig) not a big deal shouldnt' hurt anything I think its just the MB reacting to the 5v power continuously provided to the board (for ie. WOL or WOR).

Thanks for the replies.

I have built numerous systems over the past 10-12 years and only two had the issue with the powerup. Both are using Intel boards--865PERLL and 875PBZLK.

As long as it's not hurting the system, the HDD is what I was more concerned about.

Can anyone think of any problem with leaving the system plugged into an "always on" spot on the power center? The LAN and standby power indicator LED would always be on.

Thanks again.

Do yo have the system set to power on automatically in your bios settings? I use a power center too, and I have mine set to power up when i hit the master switch.

And yes, HP's, IBM's,,Dells, all do this when you apply power to the supply.

Dan,

Not to sound ignorant, but how do I set my BIOS so my system powers on automatically when I turn on the power center master switch?
