This is on a new system I built in January. Due to some other issues (not just the one in the title of this post), I have since reformatted and reinstalled, so I have a clean system. I'm using WinXP Pro SP2 on an Intel 925XCV mobo, w/2 GB RAM, and 400 GB of system drive space on a RAID 0 volume.
Here's the problem:
I can boot up and do things on my system just fine--no crashes. The only difference is, if I leave the system on for several hours, and try to reboot or shutdown, this is what happens: WinXP goes thru the shutdown process, "Logging off", "Saving your settings", and then when it gets to the "Windows is shutting down" screen, it just hangs. Last night I left it on for an hour like this, just to see if whatever was hanging it would let go, or at least give me an error message--it didn't. I always have to power off the system w/the power button. When I restart, it acts like nothing happened.
But if I fire up the system, and do exactly the same tasks, but reboot often--say, at least once an hour--I don't get the hang on shutdown. This is the weird part.
When it hangs, I can still see the mouse cursor, and move it around the screen. I can tell the mouse driver is still loaded, by the way the mouse accelerates as I move it faster; i.e., I'm familiar w/my mouse settings. I'm not suggesting at all that the mouse drive is at fault--I've actually tried two different mice, one MS, one Logitech, not only w/their special model-specific drivers, but also w/the plain old standard WinXP driver. I also tried the mice on both the USB and PS/2 ports. I only include this info to give you an idea of where in the shutdown process it's getting hung up.
Oddly, at the hang-point, the keyboard doesn't seem to work--i.e., I can't do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to shut down/reboot.
So I wanted to get everyone's advice here, before I start going in and shutting off Services and such. Does this problem sound at all familiar?
It's happened often enough now, that I can say w/near-certainty that it is tied to the amount of time the computer is on between reboots. I.e., on a short time=ability to reboot. On a long time (3+ hours)=hangs on reboot.
I'll be very grateful for any advice, or pointers in the right direction to solve this issue.
