Weird problem with Toshiba laptop touchpad

Two days back the touchpad on my windows 7, Toshiba L755-10h laptop (synaptics make) stopped working. I tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers but it didn't help. Then I downloaded the latest drivers from toshiba website and installed them. still not result. I am sure that it is a software issue becasue it works if I boot with safe mode.

finally decided to clean install the whole thing using the recovery DVDs. After more than two hours when the windows got installed again cleaning everything on the darddisk, it is back to square one. It is again not working (even though usb mouse works)

My question is, why is it not working when the laptop has been reinstalled with the original versions of windows and drivers? If it was a hardware issue, it should not be working even under safe mode.
Any ideas docs?

Have you checked your manual regarding the USB mouse? Some touchpads automatically disable when a real mouse is connected. That can also be a BIOS setting in some machines.

Thanks corkyg. No there was no setting in the bios to disable touchpad in presence of USB mouse, In fact I was using the mouse because the touch pad was not working. But Your answer inderectly solved the problem. I updated the bios from version 1.7 to 2.7 and it solved the problem.

I have the same laptop. The On/OFF for the touchpad is right between the touchpad and the space bar. Make sure you aren't turning it off inadvertantly.

OMG! You are right on the money. I now realise that I was inadvertantly pressing that button. The touchpad would be working in safe mode probably becasue the drivers loaded might not be activating the button's function to disable the touchpad. I feel like kicking myself now. So much time used up in useless activity. Aanyway writen off to cost of experience.(-:
