weird problem with SimCity 3000 and XP

i recently installed sc3k on my new computer which happens to run XP. whenever i try to play, it runs fine for a few minutes, but then weird things start to happen. specifically, the text disappears from dialogue boxes and the menus. is this just a bug in the game or xp that it messes up? anything i can do to fix it? its one of my favorite games 🙁
