Weird problem with Netgear MR314 router

This one is a bit of a stumper.
Setup:
I have 3 computers hooked up to my home network, 2 wireless, one wired, all running windows XP, connected to a NetGear MR314 wireless router, which is connected to a toshiba PSX 2200 cable modem. Our ISP is cox@home.

Problem: This started happening as soon as we got the router. About 3 times a day, sometimes more, any computer on the network will stop being able to resolve DNS's. This isn't to say the internet stops working. All messaging services I'm on continue to work, all file transfers in operation will continue at decent speeds. If I've been to a website a few minutes before this happens, I can continue surfing the website. But if I enter, say, "www.yahoo.com" in my browser window, and I haven't been to yahoo that day, it can't translate the name into an IP address. If I reset either the router or the cable modem, though, the problem is "fixed" temporarily, usually for another few hours.

Theories?
I think it has to do with the setting "Obtain DNS server automatically." Which is what one is supposed to set it to for cox@home, and also what the router is set to. Maybe it doesn't update the dns server name as often as it needs to? Perhaps some other setting is screwed up, or it's the ISP's fault?

Any suggestions would be helpful. I've confirmed that this problem does not occur when it's a computer connected directly to the cable modem, instead of computer -> router -> cable modem. I've also confirmed that powering off and on the computers, modem, and router in every conceivable order does not permanently fix the situation either. Also, it's not a browser issue, every site I've checked has been double checked using the DOS based "ping" utility, with matching results every time. I've tested several different versions of the firmware, including, yes, the latest, for the router.

Has anyone else had this problem, with any success at fixing it? Is this a common problem among the MR314's? Do I need a new router? Do I need a new life?

I have this EXACT same problem with the EXACT same router. Tried flashing it to the newest firmware and it didnt help. I too have tried every possiblity to resolve the issue to no avail.

My net is through verizon DSL, but the problem is the same. Trust me, I know how irritating this can get. I am about to just buy a new router :|

Let me know if you figure anything out. -Andy

Yarg. For future reference, how do I edit a pre-existing post? I jumped the gun on hitting "enter" in the last one, I thought it would just log me in=/ Anyway, What I meant to say is, if you get a new router and the problem magically disappears, please let me know. Much appreciated.

I have a similar problem with my WinXP Pro machine. I also have a WinXP Home laptop that this has not happened on yet, and a Win2000 Server machine that has been up and running for a month straight with no problems. I used to have a D-Link router, but am now using the Webramp 700s. Switching to the Webramp has not fixed the problem with my WinXP Pro machine.

The only way I have figured out to fix the problem is to reboot the computer. Does anyone know of a fix for this???

Well, I have a workaround that seems to be fixing the problem. I turned off the DHCP server in the router, and asigned the PCs on the network static IPs, then got my primary and secondary DNS servers from Verizon and inserted them manually. This seems to have fixed the problem for me. Let me know if it helps you at all.

I contacted Netgear regarding the issue, told them every single thing I'd tried so they wouldn't email me back something redundant like "Make sure all your cables are plugged in" and "try resetting the cable modem"... I got a response suggesting something similar to what has already been mentioned. Below is the Cut & Paste. Hope it works for you.

"The problem with the DNS resolution is a common issue with the routers ( not specifically MR314 ). This issue can be permanently resolved by hardcoring DNS ip address in the router. Hardcoring the DNS server ip address in the router is of no harm and will increase the performance as the router then router does not have to search for the DNS server to resolve the domain names to ip address. You can either specify the DNS server ip address of your ISP or the global DNS server ip address of 4.2.2.1 / 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3."

Very interesting...Here is what I am expierencing:

This only happens to my Hard wired Win XP Home machine.

Everytime I boot up and double click the IE icon I ge the same problem DNS problem etc.. No internet.

I found that is run Norton WinDoctor it always finds 22 Active X problems.

I then Repair them

I then empty my protected recycling bin

I then double click my IE icon and bang eveything works fine for the rest of the time I use my PC.

ANY THOUGHTS??

FYI...My only wireless laptop has win 98 and never has a problem contecting to the internet...
