Weird Problem with my GF's HDD..

Here's the situation..

My girl is doing her masters away from home and has just returned for a week (YAY!!) ... she brought her Hard Disk coz she was having some problems with XP...

So i take the HDD, and plug it into my computer as master (which also run Windows XP) and boot. The drive is detected fine... and it gives a choice of Operating Systems... XP Pro or Win98SE. I choose XP .. and the after some HDD activity... the screen stays blank and nothing happens... I dont even see the Windows XP startup screen. Try the safe mode... and the same problem.

I then boot into Windows 98 and it shows the startup screen and gives a "Windows Protection Error" - you must restart windows...
I restart, the same.

BTW, Win XP is on NTFS and Win98 FAT32

Fearing the HDD is damaged, I collect is as a slave to my HDD. MY comp boots up and recognizes the disk. All contents are shown of the disk. I scan the entire disk for errors and found no errors.

now what do i do...
I HAVE to boot up into her Windows XP installation to help her...

H E L P !!

P.s. I have an Old POS comp and she has a P4... does that make a diff? Also... both operating systems were booting fine on her comp.

do you both use the same motherboard? or at least the same chipset on your motherboards?

if not then you cant do what your trying

when windowsxp was installed on her machine it was setup using all the hardware on her motherboard. so when you install the hdd into a different system its not going to work right, either it wont boot at all (which is whats happening to you) or it will boot up and it will detect all kinds of new hardware (like 30+ new hardware devices) and once its finished installing all the drivers/etc for the new hardware it will probably no longer work on her pc 😀

So the only way i can access the HDD ... is to RE install XP?? on the current partition itself?
But then she ll have to re install it again when she puts it in her comp eh?
sheesh!!!

Does the same happen with Win 98 also?

I HATE MICROSOFT!!

yup your options are pretty limited

the only way to really fix up her windows problems would be to work on it while the hdd is installed in her system

anybody with other solutions.....??? ... ??

If she says she's having problems with XP then it's probably a problem with her whole computer. It could be hardware and/or software problems. No use booting her HD on yer computer because when she hooks it back to her computer it might not boot like what is happening to you right now.

The good thing of hooking it up to your computer is now you know her drive is Ok.

So get her whole computer or go visit her.

It is VERY and I repeat VERY IMPORTANT, before you try a reinstall which leads on (win2k/xp/and higher) OS's to completely wipe out the contents of the original installation to check the boot.ini file located in the root directory of that hard drive (usually C: ) or the active partition hosting the dual boot process (whatever windows XP is on). An example:

I boot 2k/98se/rhlinux (you will not see linux on here because I got lazy and decided to use a boot floppy)

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=22
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition"

notice default=multi(0)... bleh. etc, these little numbers tell you where the OS is supposed to be mapped to.
My default (win2k) is located on ide primary master( 0,0), mbr, partition 1.

You might also want to try these websites:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/info/bootini.shtml
http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/ntboot/

Since you also mention it is XP that needs the critical attention, you should try a system recovery (hopefully you didn't turn that off), or you can try to boot from the last known good profile using the f8 key on startup, OR you can try safe mode and running your util's from there and possibly the all famous scanreg /restore. gl.

reinstalling xp is the easiest crap, I dont know what your griping so much about. It takes like 40 minutes.

Dude.. a re install is easy enough... but wont she have to re install it AGAIN to get to work on her comp?

I mean... if an installation which booted fine....on her comp, refuses to boot on mine...

Then an installation... which boots fine on mine... might in all probability not work on her comp, right?

Well, she has one hdd divided onto 2 partitions. The 2nd partition has XP....
If i take OUT my hdd, put in hers into my comp and then install using the XP cd, wont the old installation be detected and installed onto....? ..and hence preserving all settings and docments??

I dont intend to do a fresh installation, just install on top of the current one, and hence preverse all settings, installed programs etc...

the problem with that is, even if you do that. windows XP will only run a "repair" in which it will just replace a set of files that are deemed corrupted, this in will no way affect the registery either, if you should chose to "install over" it will replace the entire installation.

P.O.S. = Point Of Sale

In this case.... it was supposed to mean Piece of sh!t....

nehow...

The first thing I'd suggest would be using the drive as a slave in your system and getting any and all important data off it. This might entail making a full backup of the data and/or a drive image. As far as installing XP goes, yes, it would be easiest just to reinstall it when it's back in her computer. (Install rather than Repair).

Side note: Why does she need 98 and XP?

Thanks guys.... problem solved...

I followed Boonesmi's advice and got hold of a computer with a similar config, and both windows installations booted peacefully on em.

Thanks a LOT for the help and interest...🙂
