weird problem with my desktop

today i installed windows 7 and everything was going pretty well. i left the computer running and when i came back i saw the monitor off, the computer still running and the hdd led constantly on. i thought it was in standby or something but nothing could wake it up. i forced it to turn off with the power button, unplugged the power supply cable and held the power button to flush out all the electricity (not really sure of the correct term). i then turned it on and did not hear any beeps, the monitor didn't come on and it just shut off again. a few seconds later it would just magically turn on agian. i am not sure why it is doing that. i don't think this could have anything to do with the windows 7 installation though

my specs are asus p5q-e, e7400, 4gb of corsair ram (received recently from rma), 8800 gts 512 and a enermax 500 watt power supply.

could this be the power supply goig out? i have not done any other tests so far because i was just about to go to bed and am writing this before i do so. so any advice would be appreciated. thanks.

Could be the PSU. Is it a Enermax Liberty? If so its a very good chance the PSU is dead. The liberty have had there share of problems. But there is also a chance the video card is dead.

yeah its the liberty. i don't think its the video card because i took taht out and the problem is still there. i have a little power supply tester thing and when i tried to test it, the power supply just kept on turning itself on and off continuously until i turned off the power supply. so yeah i guess the power supply is the problem. i don't know if i should get a new one or RMA though since there is only 3 months left in the warranty. what are good PSUs that can power a p5q-e, 8800gts 512, a wd6400aaks, and a dvd burner that are not too expensive. i will be upgrading the vidoe card in the future to maybe a gtx275 or gtx260 216. if possible i would like it to be under $100

Wow.

I think you meant to say, "Thank gawd my power supply still has 3 whole months under warranty! I can avoid spending up to $100 in the near term, and probably won't have to buy a new one when I upgrade my videocard in the future!"

Of course, there are some people who like spending $2.75 on a container of lighter fluid, spray it on a hundred one-dollar bills, drop a match, kick part of the pile so a few bills don't burn, then happily exclaim that they saved a few bucks.

Yeah, lots of people here say lots of things. Guess what...other brands have had their share of problems as well. Check out reviews on Newegg, and you'll see customers stating their new PP&C units arrived DOA or died within six months.

The Liberty has been around for almost four years. If they all had problems like yours, the line would have been killed off a year ago after a successful class-action lawsuit. You were a luck of the draw, the next one may live a life long enough to become obsolete.

The replacement PSU will have a new warranty. Your model has been discontinued, so you probably won't get another back from them. I'm assuming you'll get either the new ECO model, or a more powerful version of the non-ECO than what you already have. This should be a no-brainer...

By default, Windows 7 installs are set to "Balanced" power profiles, which sets the computer to go to sleep after 30 minutes. I never use sleep or hybernate, so this is a right hassle for me.

Go to the Power options control panel and change the power scheme to "High Performance", then the computer wont go to sleep any more.

There is a good chance that putting your computer to sleep, sends it to la-la land.
