Weird problem with internet access, help requested

Maybe this is a longshot, I don't know.

I've been having a strange problem with my internet access. After either 5 or 10 minutes (usually one
or the other, and it's fairly precise) my cable modem connection shuts down and I get a "page cannot
be displayed" error on IE6. I first had the problem several months ago while running Win98. Doing a
full upgrade/clean install to XP (with a new HD) seemed to have solved the problem, but it has recently
reappeared. If I restart I again gain 5 or 10 mins of access, but it is very frustrating, as you might
imagine. I have followed the advice of the "consolidated security thread" elsewhere in this forum and
while I don't think it is malware related, I can't think of any other suspects.

Scans with "Crap Cleaner", Norton AV, CW Shredder, Spyware Sweeper, MS Anti Spyware, Adaware, and Spybot comes up clean
in safe mode all come up clean. Interestingly, CW Shredder has at various times found the
"CWS.msconfig" variant on my system both before with Win98 and again later with XP, but supposedly
removed it each time. That was the only significant malware detection I have recently had.

My setup is as follows:

MSI 6341 K7 Master MB
AMD 2000+ Palomino processor
768 MB DDR RAM (1 Crucial DIMM, one Corsair)
80 GB Maxtor HD
Generic Geforce MX200 vid card (ugh, I know)
Generic 10/100 Ethernet card that came with the cable modem
Surfboard SB3100 cable modem
Insightbb.com internet provider

I suspected the cable modem (and my Netgear wireless router) before the upgrade to XP, but since the
problem disappeared for a while I no longer think either of them are the culprit. Same with my service
provider- if they were the problem why would reinstalling the OS make any difference? BTW- when I
upgraded to XP I immediately "immunized" with Spybot and Spyware Blaster (which didn't seem to help).

I am at the point where my only remaining option as far as I can tell is to reinstall the OS once again
and try to beef up my security with a good premium firewall. Does anyone have any other less drastic
and/or more permanent solution/suggestion? Thanks in advance...

I'll d/l and post my hijack this summary shortly in case anyone is interested.

Did you try bypassing the router and connecting directly to the modem?

Also, I assume you have another computer on the network. Try disconnecting the modem and transfering a file to that computer. (You can get the IP your router assigned the computer in the logs on your router to type into the windows Map Network Drive wizard). This will rule out the router as the problem. Also try this with the modem still connected right after your internet goes down to make sure its not some kind of interference or anything which could somehow cause the router to not work correctly.

Lastly try Firefox. (http://www.mozilla.com)

EDIT: Your router and modem should have a soft reset button on them somewhere. After everything else, if it still doesnt work, reset them and repeat the process.

Thanks for the quick reply and suggestions. I disconnected the router before upgrading the OS and haven't used it since. I had the same problem with Firefox when using 98, but haven't tried it since moving to XP. It's a good suggestions though- I'll download it and and see if I have the same problem.

edit- Firefox has the same problem as IE. I also have tried reseting the modem by unplugging it for a minute or so and then starting everything up again, to no avail.

Here is my hijack this log...
