Weird problem with Gateway G6-233

I recently formatted a Gateway G6-233 PC for a friend of mine (it had 95 on it and was loaded with GPFs from installed/uninstalled software) and installed Windows 98 SE on it.

For the most part, the PC runs fine. I did update the bios to the latest version, and of course downloaded the latest Gateway drivers for the sound, modem, and video card. (I think the video card is a STB velocity 128...yeah, a real screaming card... NOT!)

The problem I'm having is that the monitor seems to go into a sleep state and it never comes back to life! The caps/num lock keys still work, but the monitor never regains the signal. The monitor is a Gateway Trinitron 17".

When I modify the power setting in 98 to never turn off the monitor, I dont have any problems. So, that's a viable workaround.

Anyone have any ideas? (Besides "don't buy a gateway" )If I remember correctly, I think I used the default 98 drivers for the video because the ones I dloaded from gateway said "this is not for the hardware you have" - even though the gateway product number was the correct one.

Thanks!

I've had similarm problems with my Riva TNT and some drivers, in particular when I used the Nvidia drivers rather than the creative ones tne screen just stayed blank, I had to write down the buttons to press to change the resolution without being able to see the screen.

Sounds like a driver problem, I've encountered the following:

1. Drivers that don't like 800x600
2. Drivers that create a blank screen when running at 100hz refresh
3. Drivers that continuingly crash the system when trying to run Open GL

Thankfully, the current ones (which are not the latest as those had problems) seem to run okay, I too have a 17" Triniton but a Belinea one.

Thanks for the advice. It was pretty strange that when I tried to install the Gateway drivers for the velocity 128, it complained that it was not for the hardware that was installed. Maybe I should get new Video drivers straight from NVidia then? Guess it can't hurt.

I mean, the PC boots up fne, it's just that when it goes into monitor powersaving mode, it never wakes back up. Could be a bios problem, but since I dont have the machine in front of me, I'll have to wait a couple of weeks for my friend to come home from school.

Again, thanks for the advice, at least I kind of thought the same thing (driver issue with video card). Makes me feel slightly better.

Regards,
