Weird problem with FDISK

I have an Intel 850MV Motherboard with P4 2.4gig CPU & 1 gig RDRAM. I'm trying to create a FAT32 partition on a brand new hard-drive using FDISK off a WIN98SE Boot floppy.

When I type FDISK I get the "do you want large drive support" message. I answer YES (or NO) and it drops back to the A: prompt. FDISK just won't run. I tried it on 4 different hard drives from 40 to 120 gigs all with the same result.

I had no problem creating a partition using Partition Magic.

Anyone ever heard of this issue before ? Didn't find anything on Microsoft KB or Intel support.

<< Maybe your floppy with fdisk on it is messed up? >>

That was my first thought but it wasn't the case. :(

P.S. I'm trying to partition a 40gig drive.

What exactly did you type? Like what parameters did you put in?

ie. a:\>fdisk ...

just out of curiosity, is 98 the OS you plan on installing? or are you just using fdisk from a 98 floppy and are going to install a different os?

either way, i would say save yourself the trouble and just boot to the OS cd and do the partioning/formatting from within the setup. saves alot of hassle.... one thing to note tho, if you plan on using Windows XP, if the partition you create is larger than 32gb, it will not give you the option to format in FAT32, only NTFS.

FDISK :)

There are only 2 or 3 command line options for FDISK. I even downloaded the Microsoft FDISK update and still the same problem. I've been doing this for 16 years with never a problem running FDISK. It only does NOT work on the Intel 850MV motherboard (P4 2.4 1gig RDRAM system). I have 3 other PC's here that work fine with the same hard-disk and the same copy of FDISK. It's just become an issue of principle now. I was able to resolve it with Partition Magic but I'd like to know why FDISK isn't working. It has to be realted to either the motherboard, CPU or amount of RAM installed. I'm booting off a WIN98 boot floppy.

GiGoLo ... you are correct in everything you say, but I still want to know why it isn't working.
