Weird problem with external hard disks

unbiased

Senior member
I am able to use two of my USB external hard disks, one pata laptop hard disk with adapter and one western digital elite on my netbook with windows 7. The same hard disks when connected to a computer running XP SP3, are nor getting detected, not even powered( no LED showing and no pop up message for detection). The same computer is able to recognize and use a USB flash drive (with the same USB sockets too).
Don't know what is causing this. Any ideas docs?

Sounds like the USB power on the XP machine is weak. Have you tried a powered hub?

What is a powered hub? Is it some king of USB manifold with power from the wall outlet? So it means that the reason may be lesser available power than required to run the drives? Yes that seems plausible. Thanks.
