Weird problem in L.A. Verizon DSL. Who to call?

My Zone Alarm has blocked over 200 pings in the last half hour. Forget MS Blast. This thing is hitting maybe 20/1 over that, right now.

My ISP is Earthlink, but the actual connection is through Verizon. This has been going on all day, during several connect periods. Several Verizon techs kept telling me they can't even file a report on this because I'm not a Verizon DSL subscriber. I kept telling them they have to think outside the box and send up a flare because it looks like someone's trying to DOS their hardware, not my machine or Earthlink.

After five separate tries, I finally got a more intelligent tech to understand the nature of the problem and promise he'd find someone to report this to. Anyone have any other ideas about who would understand a such a warning, let alone have a clue about what to do?

buy a Linksys router hub, AU Tiger has one in the for sale trade forums,

hard to ping thru a hardwar firewall.

when i bought mine it was $179+tax,about 3 years ago.!

Trust me, even if your ISP *WAS* Verizon, you'd be better off calling your grandmother.

In fact, if your grandmother is like mine and has been dead and buried for nine years, you'd STILL be better off trying to get tech support through her decomposing body than you would with those goddamn wastes of flesh at Verizon.

ATTENTION: IF ANYONE HERE WORKS FOR VERIZON, SHOW YOURSELF NOW SO I CAN SQUASH YOU LIKE THE USELESS BUGS YOU ARE. I HATE YOU ALL. BASTARDS.

Thanks, caveman. That's not the problem. My Zone Alarm (ver. 2.6.362 -- the last good one) is blocking it all from my machine. The problem is, if it keeps up, it's going to do some damage to the company that's providing my connection. My machine will be OK, but if Verizon doesn't wake up, I'll be all dressed up with nowhere to go. :Q

amnesiac -- Thanks for the laughs, even if it is true. 🙂

LOL!!!! I agree.

<-- Loves the support from SpeakEasy.

Oh goodie.

ZV <--Is scheduled to start getting Verizon DSL in "5-8 business days". On the plus side, Verizon turned on my phone a full 24 hours before they said they could. Maybe I'll be lucky.

All in all Verizon DSL is quite good Zen. I've had it since June and haven't had any problems with it so far. (Outages or otherwise) There was an issue with our normal telephone bill which took a month and a half to sort out but they're charging us less for our DSL than they should be, so that makes up for it 🙂 But yes, their support sucks (it's all outsourced anyway)

Oh BTW - they tell you not to install your DSL self install kit until you get a call saying it's ok to, but no need to listen to that. I installed it 2 days after I got it and it worked 🙂 Of course, I got a call the next morning saying my DSL was ready to use, but it doesn't hurt to try to plug it in

Cool. Apparently I'm also close enough to the telco switching office to get the full 1.5 megabit connection though we'll see how the ancient apartment phone lines handle things. I can get 49.2Kbps on dialup though, so the line seems reasonably clean.

Excellent 🙂 Our lines are well over 20 something years old but I get a pretty good connect.

Oh btw, if the setup program claims it doesn't recognize your NIC just ignore it and continue anyway (when installing the software)

Oh, Verizon's actual DSL *service* isn't bad. Outages are rare and speeds are as advertised.

It's when something goes wrong, or when you want to change your plan that things get hairy.

Yep because they outsource their tech support to mindless robots. I know because I worked for them a few days and then quit because it was too mindless and retarded.
