weird partially shared cable modem

ive just finished installing our new cable modem (yay! ) and as far as i can tell it works fine on my dads system downstairs but does not quite work properly with mine.

I had had connection sharing working fine before with the dial up connection so I know that in theory all should work fine. The problem is that certain apps can access the internet whilst others cant. The likes of kazaa, morpheus and netants can access the internet fine and download things but ie and outlook express cant.

In IE the status bar says that the server is found but it cant download any data from the site and the same thing happens in outlook as well. It can connect to my mail server but it stalls as soon as it tries to download the message.

Needless to say this is really weird and more than a bit annoying so do any of you lot have any ideas what could be up with it???

i forgot to add that im running winXP and my dads machine is running winME. as far as i can tell ive installed and setup ics properly, the same way that i had it set up to share the dialup connection previously.

any help would be very, very greatly appreciated cos its infuriating not being able to get online properly from my machine.

You may have to re-install ICS. Did you try to detect proxy settings? What about ipconfig /all?

There are other alternatives to ICS. Sygate, Wingate, etc...

However a router would be best whether a stand alone or another PC based one like Freesco.

I have personally setup ICS countless times and rarely had problems even though it is not very good. IMHO Sygate gets the nod for this application for ease of setup. You must eventually buy it though.

cheers for the advice Iron. The connection is still intermittently working, some websites work some dont! i can get my uni email and newsgroups and my hotmail through ie but my mail email account (yahoo/geocities) doesnt work. IE works for hotmail and a few other site but not everything (anandtech forums, yahoo and loads more) and some site kinda work (pages load but not the images :confused

im running auto ip config on my machine but the ip on the server machine is set to 192.168.0.1. when i try to run auto ip config on the server machine i cant get anything from upstairs.
