weird Outlook Express 5 messages/errors at startup

Not sure what's going on---I've got two boxes that have each been running W2k w/ service pack 2 flawlessly. Without giving to much detail at this point I'll just say that when I start up both machines these days, Outlook Express starts up automatically and a blank message appears with the file "ready.exe" included as an attachment. Then there are all these bizare letter icons at the bottom of almost every start menu sub-menu...I think they have the extension *.eml (i'm at work now so can't check).

This happen to anyone before? What does it all mean? Will I live? Is it possible to just completely remove outlook express?

thx in advance for any recommendations/suggestions

since everyone is so interested in this thread, i thought I'd report back and let you know this is a sign of the nimda virus. It is a wonderful virus that can be removed w/ numerous free tools including the one I used - AVERT - available at McAffee's site.

peace out homies
