Weird odor

Hey guys, so today when i turned on the AC i started to notice a strange gas like smell coming through the vents and when i asked my passengers if they can smell something that's off, they told me that they can't smell anything. It would seem that the odor started to be more noticeable to me when i stepped on the gas. Most threads that i've seen so far would indicate a fuel leak but i am still hoping that that's not the case. I am driving a 2007 golf mk 5.

Step in some gas in your garage? or maybe it was one of the other people in your car stepped in a puddle of gas. See if it still smells today. I know I have stepped in a little gas at a station and the car reeked of gas, doesn't take much.

Odor from AC is usually mold but it smells like mold, if it smells like antifreeze you have heater core leak also common

Look around the fuel rail and injectors, pressure regulator if it has one up there instead of in the tank. Gas streaming out should leave a clean spot on the usual engine dust.

Is this a repeatable problem or it just happened for a moment during that one trip? If one trip maybe you were following behind someone with a gas leak? I would suspect that if it was a leak in your own engine bay then your A/C, unless in recirculate mode, would pull in enough gas fumes that everyone would smell it.

I had a weird smell from my A/C system that started a couple months before it started to stop working when the car was stopped in traffic. Ended up being low refrigerant. Never figured out what the smell was, but it was a thing.

Didn't smell like gasoline, exactly, but it was a strange sort of chemical smell.
