Weird, Oblivion is slowing down...

For example, in one area I'll have 30fps average, and suddenly it's down to 15fps average.

My X800XL IS running at around 70 degrees celcius, could it be throttling? Is there any way to control the throttling of speed?

All I need to know is if it's automatically underclocking my video card due to it overheating. Then i'll get an aftermarket heatsink. But I can't tell. -_-

I doubt it's throttling. Oblivion has pretty unstable framerates for most people. My 7900GT will go from 60fps indoors to 10fps outdoors depending on the terrain and effects that in the scene.

X800XL

Now, this happens spontaneously in the SAME AREA where it might have been 30fps just a second ago. I load up a save, walk around in one area, get from 25-40fps, and suddenly it's getting only 15fps.

It FEELS like throttling. I just can't really tell.

Do a 'search' here and also look at the OPTIMIZATION Guides for Oblivion .. . . it is usually necessary to 'tweak' your setting

Did you PATCH it?

Self Shadows OFF?

i run with Grass all the way down . . . everything elsse can be maxed at 11x8 with 4xAA+Bloom [mine is an x850xt]

I'm running the latest patch with tweaks as recommended by tweak guide. Grass is on HIGH but as I said, it works fine at 30-ish fps and then suddenly it goes to crap. Same area, same view.

Oh well, I'll be getting the zalman GPU heatsink soon, so I guess I'll come back and report after I try that out.

It's not the heat, it's just oblivion is like that. Sometimes for me, it gets too slow so I just save and reload. It's got something to do with it not clearing the memory and so our cards wtih 256mb kinda gets raped sometimes.

well . . there's your problem :p
[as you "turn" your computer is strugging to render . . . grass . . . ]

no VGA cooler will make ANY difference . . . [except for your temps] . . .

if you DON't believe me . . . mow your grass DOWN!

I can get 30fps in the SAME area WITH GRASS ON MAX for half an hour. It's not the problem. The slowdown comes suddenly and rondomly.

first of all, you *shouldn't* get 30 FPS with grass all the way up . . . unless some of your other setting are 'down' - your XL just isn't powerful enough - even at 10x7 or 11x8. :p

did you TRY turning grass completely down?

. . . experiment with the Tweak Guide?

ALL other apps disabled in Task Manager? [especially any PC health monitoring SW]

. . . After that, if you are still having this issue, you may have a memory leak problem . . . no one with the patched game is reporting it [afaik] . . .

finally . . . Reinstall your O/S :p

:D
