Weird notations in microsoft word

while hammering out a last-minute 15 page paper when all of a sudden, Microsoft Word started using this weird notation where all the spaces are indicated by dots, and at the end of every paragraph is a pi symbol 😕 since the radius of my head is quite large, i have no idea what key i hit to cause this to happen, buit does anyone know how to disable all these annoying symbols ?

i think your viewing the markup maybe?

markup it is. nothing unusual. the cartridge returns are the backwards P usually used for editing.
