Weird noise while driving (tires)

Starting yesterday I noticed that my 2010 VW Tiguan is making road noise. The faster i go the more I hear it which makes me think it is tire related. Here is what I've done.

1. checked tires for items stuck in them.
2. checked wheel wells for loose items
3. checked undercarriage for loose items
4. checked tire pressures, all normal


The noise sounds like rubber slapping the ground.

Has it been in for service lately? Maybe someone forgot to put back in the splash guard

No, it has not been in for service lately but I did have it washed and detailed on Tuesday and the noise was not present prior to then. Is the splash guard visible? Where can i check for it?

turn the wheel a bit and check to see if the plastic liner or splash guard inside the wheel wells rub at all. On a 2010 tiguan you also have a large plastic sheet under the car that can sometimes break and flap at speed.


Where do you live OP?

Is it a rock wedged in the tread? Part of tire peeling off?

I checked the tread but do not see anything lodged.

Did you check the inside sidewall of the tires for damage or ruptures?

I had a similar issue when I had a screw embed itself to the inside of my tire that I picked-up from a construction site.

try switching to neutral and coasting a bit when you hear the noise. that way you can determine if it is related to engine speed or wheel speed.

In general if it is a bad front tire the steering wheel will shake a bit.
If it is the rear your butt will tend to feel it in the seat.
