Hey guys! Recently registered to the forums because of an issue I have with my new gtx 970 turbo oc which is less than a week old, it seems to be coming from the fan as the noise stops when I manually stop the fan. I need your experts opinion, if this is normally with this card or to return it. Thanks ^^

Edit: here's a link to the sound of the fan, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JbLPiVCIEDE . And the fan keeps making that noise regardless of speed

I can't hear a problem from your video. Just sounds like a computer with fans on. Could you describe the noise and tell us why you think it is unusual and a concern?

The sound is as soon as the computer is booted up, the buzzing/rattling noise coming from the GPU 2 seconds into the video the Case Fans then boot up after which is 8 seconds into the video I sent. It sounds like the Bearings are wearing out, or maybe a bad fan? Or just the style of the fan as it sounds bad from the other GPU's I've had.

Thanks for clarifying.

Just so we are clear, the noise happens with or without the GPU fan spinning? I ask because the original post stated it didn't happen when the fan was stopped but the edit says the fan speed doesn't matter. Maybe you meant as long as its spinning, but it doesn't happen when it stopped. Just trying to clear it up.

Have you researched 'Coil whine' that the 900 series Nvidia cards seem to have? That is a bit higher pitched than what you describe but it is a constant humming.

Sorry for not being clear, but I meant when the fan is spinning it makes the humming/buzzing and the humming stops when I stop the fan with my finger. I don't think its a coil whine as it sounds too low and not high pitched.

Okay, thanks. I appreciate you clarifying.

I'll tell you what you already know, it sounds like the fan to me :). Sorry, I don't have any information on whether this is normal for that kind of fan/card or whether it should be replaced but hopefully the information you provided here will be helpful to someone who does know this card better than I do.

I looked up your card and that is a pretty cool blower system, it is open on the bottom side too which I haven't seen before. The card does tout a dual ball bearing fan which may cause a different sound than a sleeve bearing fan, but it is supposed to be 'smoother' and with less friction.

In any case, if you don't get a definitive answer you could always replace it to be safe and do have three years of warranty in case something happens if beyond your return period.

Good luck.

Thank you for the information, I was just worried because the sound is very audible even when wearing headphones . But Im on the fence of sending it back or keeping it.

Update; I replaced the card at the retailer and the problem is fixed.

Glad to hear you got it fixed and thanks for updating us.

From the video it doesn't sound that loud, almost normal if you ask me. If it was was audible over headphones that doesn't sound normal at all. Enjoy your card!
