I happened upon a copy of XP and installed it on my machine (which had been running Win2k flawlessly). Anyway, I didn't have any problems at first and everything was smooth. However, a couple of days ago something strange happened with my network connectivity. I'm no longer able to download files. I can access websites just fine. However, when I try to download install files, or any other file for that matter, it just hangs. Since I needed to wipe my C:\ partition anyway I figured I'd take the extra step in trying to fix it. I wiped the c:\ partition and reformatted and did a clean install of XP. Internet still works like a charm but if I try to download quicktime, winamp, nero, or any other program or downloadable file it just hangs there. I've monkeyed with the network settings a ton.
Also, I added the PC to a workgroup I created for my wife and I's computers to be able to share stuff. (On a side note her's is running XP upgraded from 2000 and can download files without a problem. Both have identical NICs in them). Anyway, we are both in the same WorkGroup and hard drives are shared, but I can't get a connection established. When I go to view workgroups on either computer it gives a message that the workgroup couldn't be accessed and maybe I don't have rights. I can ping her computer and outside sites just fine. I've tried every trick I know to establish a connection between the two systems to no avail.
Any help is appreciated.
Edit to add that I have a firewire card that the PC seems to want to look at as a network adapter. On setup I selected to not have it setup TCP/IP, etc for it (no need) and I've even tried disabling it to see if that helps. Only thing I haven't done is physically remove it.
