I am at a small college in central Iowa and have been experiencing weird network speed related issues since I came here. All of the computers in all the computer labs access the internet at speeds that are very fast and what I would consider normal for a college broadband... The computers in the dorms however seem to have very delayed internet. Sometimes I can wait for a minute or 2 for a webpage to load which is rediculous. A lot of the time it will just time out trying to do searches on ebay or something for example. Towards the beginning of the year I was playing around with linux and setup a dual boot on my computer. I noticed the that internet running in linux was as fast as the internet speed from the computer lab computers (the speed it should be). This really played with my mind because I have no idea how this could be so. I have tried obvious things such as playing around with the MTU size in windows but it doesnt seem to matter. I even formated and did a clean windows xp install a month or so ago. Something really strange happened the other day. My who had me install linux on her computer wanted me to set her up with a dual windows/linux boot like mine. When I put winxp back on her machine the internet ran at normal speed and it really blew my mind. She has the first machine running windows XP outside of a computer lab I have seen actually load webpages they way they are supposed to be and this problem is driving me nuts.
How can the speed be fast in the computer labs running winxp and not in the dorms. How can a single computer in the dorms running winxp have the normal speed, and how can linux boxes in the dorms run at normal speed while XP cannot.
This is really crazy to me, but I admit I dont know all that much about networking. I have only setup a few small home ones. I was wondering if anyone had experienced anything like this or had any ideas of things to try. I would really like to get my windowsXP internet speed up to normal because it is hard to play games with a 1000+ ping and linux is not the best gaming system. It sucks to have to reboot my computer to linux anytime I want to do serious web browsing to.
Dont get me wrong, I really like linux (not to tick off the linux users
) I think it is a lot better than windows but I need windows for the gaming.
