have a friend who has a new computer. a network is setup in the house, here is the problem

<< i am on MY new computer ON the network... but just not in my room. IN my room the other computer works.. but mine doesn't.. so since i'm on the network, the protocols should be fine right? >>

any ideas on why the new computer won't work in his bedroom, but 2 other computers do, and the new computer will connect to the network plugged into a jack in another room...

Check to see if it is a physical problem: make sure RJ45 jacks are correctly plugin.

It is the NIC proble if he can't ping: 127.0.0.1

If he can't ping the gateway, or the firewall internal address...then it is the cable link problem (check connection and see if the ligts are on the NIC & hub/router, check cable RJ45 connections, check the hub/router ports to see if it is in the correct port & is a know good port, check to see if the cable is goog and is a straigh or cross over).

If he can ping all the above from all machine, then check the routing table & gateway setting.

If he can connect in one place with the computer then not in another, and 2 other computers can hit the same connection then it is a physical layer problem. Check the wiring, and by check I mean replace it either temporarily or permanantly. Also, I have known ports on a hub or switch to go bad so make sure you swap the plug before you go and do anything else. Do the easy stuff first.

Do you get a green Link light on the computer? This isn't guarantee that everything is ok, but its a step (I had a pc at work show up as linked, but not be able to do anything. Wires were crossed during a Professional install of equipment by an outside network tech).
