weird multiplier problem.......

:disgust: i got an xp1600 that i unlocked. i use it on an shuttle ak31a board. i can only adjust the multiplier to 11.5 other than default. anything else, i get a black screen at reboot and have to clear CMOS.if i even go lower than default it does the same thing. What gives??

Any ideas anyone????
 
one of the threads i read from a guy who was unlocking his xp said the exact same thing, turned out he didnt have it completly unlocked (at least one of the bridges wasnt connected completly

you probably already know you cant do it with a pensil because of to much resistance, you will needs something like conductive ink pen, or window defogger repair kit
 
so if i didnt connect all the bridges then i would still be able to move the multiplier to 11.5? i thought that if you could up the multipliers at all then the chip was unlocked.

im goona check the m tonight and see whats up. i hope thats the problem and not my new motherboard.

And BTW, im using a defog repair kit
 
I have the exact same problem! I have an Athlon XP 1600+ and I can't go above 11.5x. What happens is it won't boot and requires a CMOS clearing, just like you! I have a MSI K7T266 Pro2 though, hopefully it's not our mobo's! I have go over the contacts several times and tested them with my ohmmeter, they all appear to be connected though. If, perhaps, the superglue got rubbed away from one of the ditches, could that possibly cause this strange behavior? How could I tell if it had indeed been rubbed away (with my multimeter?)?

nah. usually when you get something inside the pits, it results in the chip being locked at 11x. ill be real surprised if that super glue will EVER go anywhere. i think the problem is that, like you, i went over the bridges a few times ( a few coats on each jumper) and we inadvertently put too much of a resistance factor between the L1's. i think that if i use a silver conductive pen and make the traces between the bridges really fine, then my problem will be solved. im going to try the rear defog kit one more time making the lines as fine as i can with only applying it once and see what happens.
 
My Ohmmeter reports <5 Ohms per connection, and that is hardly any. On TomsHardware.com they showed 7 ohms and it was fine. But go ahead and try your defog kit one more time. Keep me updated. I'm going to try and find out what else it could be. I'm just curious, are your pits like "pits" or "slits"? The newer ones (within two months) are smaller slits, but mine (which I bought about a week after they came out) has larger pits. If we both bought ours early then perhaps the chips can't physically go any faster.

i just bought mine from newegg.com about a week ago, maybe it was one of the older ones, i dont know. and mine has pits, not slits.
 
the problem with mine was that my memory settings were too aggressive and i also needed to up the Vcore on both mem and cpu.
all of them work now😀
 
I made the memory settings as slow as possible, and increased Vcore and DDR voltage all the way up. When I rebooted the screen was still blank, so I needed to clear the CMOS (as usual) but this time when I rebooted I found out that my HDD had been corrupted!

What happened?
 
sounds like you set your voltages up too high. i only turnes mine up to the next slot in BIOS. other than that i dont know. maybe you should just leave your CPU at stock and do some more research on the subject so you wont fry your new chip and then when you get the answer youre looking for, then go into BIOS and make your changes.
Better to be safe than sorry.
