So, finally upgraded from my Gainward 6800GT GS ($95 for a rare, kick-ass AGP card that'll play Oblivion at 12x10 really well, PM). I have an 8600GT from eVGA and it's performance is great, but I seem to have some complications with multimonitor support.
When I first booted it had my secondary monitor as the primary and nothing on my primary(I apparently plugged that monitor into the primary DVI slot) [these are both CRT's btw]. Using the Windows interface I rearranged my monitors as I wanted them, no problems. After updating drivers I restarted the computer and found myself with the settings reversed, both monitors worked, but the secondary was once again the primary and vice versa. So I reset the settings again.
I then left my computer for a while and it went through it's usual power save state, ten minutes of screensaver then monitors off, then later HD's off. At that point I came back and my symptoms were reversed again (primary showing the blank screen usually associated with the secondary monitor) but this time my secondary monitor showed 'No signal.' Adjusting the cables, changing the settings on the functioning monitor yielded nothing on the nonfunctioning monitor. I swapped plug places and the monitor that hadn't been working started and vice versa. I restarted the computer and everything came back to normal, even maintaining my multimonitor settings. At this point I thought, enough's enough for one day and turned the computer off.
The next day I turned my computer on and I had icons on the primary monitor but the Start bar was on the secondary monitor. After a dozen setting adjustments I finally got things back in order. Left the computer to rest for a few hours and when I came back the primary monitor was blank again (as if it had reverted to being the secondary monitor) and the secondary monitor was filled with squiggly lines and said "Oversignal" or some such. The computer also appeared to be frozen, but it shut down using the power switch without difficulty. That was this morning and I'm at work all day.
So, anyone have any ideas or am I looking at an RMA? Detailed specs below.
